Sketch Ghent

Sketch 2026.4 (237285) released on 7 October 2026

Documents you open with this update will be incompatible with older Sketch versions, which can affect anyone you share documents with.

Introducing: component variants

Components can now have variants, which makes for cleaner libraries and easy swapping between different versions of a component.

For example, you can now create a single button component and all its variants, organized with properties like State (Default, Hover, Pressed…), Theme (Dark/Light), and Size (Regular, large…). Before, you would have needed separate components organized in groups.

To create a variant, select an existing component source and press ⌘Y (or choose “Add Variant” in the toolbar, inspector menu or command bar).

You can combine multiple components into a single component with variants by choosing “Combine as Variants”, which keeps their instances attached. We’ll use their names to pre-fill the new component’s properties.

We show a single component rather than every variant when you browse to make the list easier to work with. You can swap a component’s variants via its properties in the inspector after you insert it.

Introducing: sections

Sections are a new way for you to group and organize high-level pieces of your design. They work hand-in-hand with variants. You can think of them like mini pages, or super frames.

For example, if you have a component with variants that use a “Theme” property, you can bring those variants together under a section, with a nested section for the “Dark” theme and another for the “Light” theme. You could also use sections to group together screens that form a specific flow, such as onboarding, with nested sections for the login and sign-up flows.

You can draw a section by pressing S. You can also select existing layers and group them as a section via Arrange > Group as Section or by pressing ⌃S. Sections are made to feel like you’re working directly on the canvas, rather than inside a frame or group. When you duplicate or paste a layer inside a section, we’ll automatically tile it horizontally and resize the section to fit its new content (preserving any spacing), saving you time on organizing and arranging.

Sections have no styling by default, but just like frames, you can add any styling you wish. You can also add a stack layout to a section to have the layers inside it be arranged for you.

Symbols are now called components

This aligns our terminology with the rest of the industry. We’ve also renamed “Components View” to “Assets View” as that’s where you can browse and organize all assets in your document: components, styles, variables and templates.

This change does not affect the shortcuts to create a component (⌘Y) or insert components (C or Y).

Improvements (21)

Components and assets

  • You can now use Show in Assets View from the command bar or Layer > Component to reveal selected components in the assets view. We keep the current sidebar group where possible, or switch to the closest common group, select the sources, and scroll the first source into view.
  • We’ve introduced a new Send To menu (in the canvas and layer list context menus, and under Arrange in the menu bar), which makes it easy to send component sources and top-level frames or graphics to another page or section. We’ve also updated the Send to “Components” Page action (previously Send to “Symbols” Page) so it looks for either “Components” or “Symbols” page names, and creates a “Components” page when it can’t find them. Both actions give you a confirmation on the canvas with the option to go to the layers you’ve moved.
  • The Create Component (formerly Create Symbol) dialog now offers a choice of Group or Page for your component. Group lets you pick an existing component group so you don’t have to type it out (although you can still do this if you prefer). Page lets you pick where the component source gets placed: in the components page, current page, or another page (we remember your choice for each document).
  • We’ve made component source override settings easier to scan, with clearer indentation and hierarchy lines. Layer icons now match those in the layer list 1:1, including purple icons for components, which also fixes a bug where many layers used a wrong icon.
  • You can now use Enable All and Disable All beside Allow Overrides to change all override properties listed in a component source’s settings. When you select multiple component sources, these actions affect only the properties shown for all of them.
  • When you paste component instances from another document or unlink components from their library, we now always place the respective sources on the “Components” or “Symbols” page, creating one if needed. Previously, if no such page existed, we’d place the sources in the first page which had sources. When this happens, we’ll show you a confirmation message, which also lets you navigate to those components.

Layers and editing

  • You can now hold ⇧ while dragging an existing line’s endpoint in normal selection mode to preserve its current angle. In vector editing mode, ⇧ continues to restrict moving points along the X or Y axis.
  • You can now hold ⌥ while inserting a line to draw it outwards from its center.
  • You can now use Move to Frame in the Arrange or context menus to move nested layers directly into their top-level frame.
  • You can now use Select Matching Layers to select the same layer across all variants of a component or all top-level frames in the same selection. We match layers by name and their relative position in the layer hierarchy. For auto-named text layers, we match by text style instead. You can find this action under Edit > Select, in the canvas context menu, the command bar, or use ⇧⌘M.

Inspector

  • You can now hold ⌥ in the Style and Export sections of the inspector to turn each header’s (+) button into a remove (-) button, so you can remove all fills, borders, shadows, effects, or export options from your selection.
  • You can now reset all overrides in your selection in one click from the Selection heading in the inspector. This button only appears when there are overrides to reset.

Effects and rendering

  • We’ve improved performance for documents using Glass, Motion Blur and Zoom Blur effects.
  • Glass layers with a shadow now always generate a shadow that includes the glass shape.
  • We’ve improved performance when your document contains a mask layer that doesn’t contain any layers to mask.

General

  • When you copy CSS, we now include the correct corner-shape values for Angles, Inside Square, and Inside Arc corners, along with the smoothing percentage as a comment for Smooth corners.
  • We’ve added a Download item to the workspace window’s context menu, so you can save a document’s .sketch file to your Downloads folder without opening the web app. It works for selections of multiple documents, showing progress on each item and revealing the finished files in Finder.
  • Temporary confirmation messages at the bottom of the canvas now always show a close button with a countdown indicator. They also fade out now, because why not.
  • Align actions in the canvas context menu now show their keyboard shortcuts, matching the ones in the Arrange menu.
  • We’ve updated various colors in the UI (component, resolved annotation, connection status, etc.) to use Display P3, making them more vibrant and consistent on compatible displays.
  • We’ve replaced the borders around the notifications and comments toolbar badges with transparent cutouts, these look better against the glass background in both light and dark mode.

Changes (8)

Components and assets

  • Layers using shared layer or text styles now use neutral icons in the layer list, making them easier to distinguish from components.
  • Resize handles for multi-selections now use the component color when every selected layer is a component source or instance.
  • We’ve renamed From this Document to This Document, making menus and breadcrumb paths more compact.

Layers and editing

  • New paths that you draw with the Pen, Pencil, or Line tool no longer come with a disabled fill, reducing style clutter and making them more suitable for Swap Fills and Borders (⇧X).
  • We’ve standardized the style of on-canvas buttons like Select Containing Component and Make Grid to match the new Add Variant button. Make Grid also shows a resize cursor, since you create the grid by dragging.
  • We’ve restored the previous behavior that treated a dashed border as non-dashed when the border was thicker than the dash gap.

General

  • We’ve renamed the export artboards command in sketchtool to export frames for top-level frame exports, the export components command to export assets, and the --include-symbols option to --include-components. The previous names remain as aliases, so your scripts continue to work as-is, and dedicated help <command> output lists the aliases. Exported artifact names and manifest schemas remain unchanged as well.
  • We’ve removed the Choose Smart Layout… action from the menu bar and the command bar, but you can still use the various dedicated directional Smart Layout actions.

Fixes (25)

Components and assets

  • Fixes a visual glitch when dragging a component to the canvas.
  • Fixes a bug that caused the asset replacement menu in the inspector to highlight rows with Sketch’s accent color, instead of your system’s accent color.
  • Fixes a bug that stopped you from changing the Ends options of a border when you edited a layer style in the assets view.
  • Fixes a bug that caused asset update notifications to show whenever you inserted components from libraries into workspace documents.
  • Fixes a bug that meant the visibility toggle state for component overrides could mismatch their actual visibility on the canvas.
  • Fixes a bug that caused disclosure chevrons for components in the layer list to appear gray instead of purple.

Inspector

  • Fixes a bug that meant the menu for choosing which side a border applies to used a larger font than other inspector menus.
  • Fixes a bug that caused the Tint panel to show controls from a panel you had previously opened in the inspector.
  • Fixes a bug that sometimes prevented you from dragging sliders in the inspector when they were set to their maximum value.
  • Fixes a bug that meant undoing while you edited a text field in the inspector reversed an earlier edit instead of the text you were typing. ⌘Z now steps back through your typing first.
  • Fixes a bug that showed an unavailable Reset Overrides button in the inspector’s Colors, Text, Images, and Layer Styles sections. You now see the button only when you can reset overrides.
  • Fixes a bug that caused the second-row indicators for shadows and individual borders to appear misaligned in the inspector.

Stacks and layout

  • Fixes a bug that meant combining shapes that all ignored a stack’s layout removed their Ignore Layout setting.
  • Fixes a bug that caused negative padding values when you added a stack layout to a frame containing layers outside its bounds.
  • Fixes a bug that caused SVGs you dragged into stacks to take on relative height and width, which led to them collapsing and disappearing.

Canvas

  • Fixes a bug that caused vector paths you deleted to remain visible on the canvas until you made another edit in that document.
  • Fixes a bug that caused the Rename option to appear in the canvas context menu for nested frames without a canvas title.
  • Fixes a bug that caused Sketch to hang at very high zoom levels with very large frames.
  • Fixes a bug that meant a line ending with an emoji lost its paragraph spacing, so the next line sat directly below it.

Import and export

  • Fixes a bug where WebP exports didn’t respect the Trim setting.
  • Fixes a bug that caused some imported SVG gradients to render as a flat solid color instead of a gradient.

General

  • Fixes a bug that caused double-clicking the title bar to immediately restore the window’s previous size when it already filled your screen vertically.
  • Fixes a bug that stopped the @-mention menu from appearing when you tried to insert a mention at the beginning of an existing comment.
  • Fixes a bug that caused export format rows in Settings > Presets to appear misaligned and protrude from the pane.
  • Fixes a bug where the sidebar would scroll back to the current selection each time you toggles the visibility of a different layer in the layer list.

iOS (1)

  • We now respect the Trim setting when you export layers from the iOS app.
